Just breathe.

Breathe in. Breathe out. Breathe in. Breathe out. Easy. Right? Wrong. For my little Colton, this has not been an easy task. About 2 weeks ago I noticed Colton was breathing very irregularly (always has been a little odd of a breather). Lots of holding his breath for a few seconds, slight grunting on the expiration, and then quick breaths in again. He started doing it all day, off and on. He did it when he was sad, excited, happy, relaxed, thinking...all the time.

Last week at Colton's well-check I mentioned it to my Doctor. She listened to the irregular breathing and wanted me to look into it further. So,

  • 5 appointments
  • 1 xray
  • 2 oxygen level tests
  • 1 appt with a pediatric pulmonologist
  • and 1 SCHEDULED hospital trip Feb 2 for the pulmonologist to put Colton under and do a "scope" of his breathing passageways (tube down throat with little camera) later...
I'm tired, worried and stressed. The pulmonologist agreed that Colton had a few irregular aspects to his breathing, and decided a scope was necessary. There are any number of things it could be, so hopefully the "scope" determines what it is, and it is not serious.

Side note: I wonder if his slight difficulty with breathing is part of the reason Colton doesn't like to move?

Here are a few video examples of his irregular breathing (turn up volume and listen carefully):

Lest you think he only does it when he is straining, here is an example of irregular breathing while relaxed (excuse the tired and slightly homeless looking darling baby)
*best example from :20-:40 seconds and 1:20-end

My favorite parts of the video: Mike announcing, Colton taking the ball out of the hoop and the highlight - the double dunk!! Even with his little bit of funny breathing he is still adorable. Tracy said if you want to call him, feel free. I talked to him about it today. He can explain a lot and can answer all of your questions.

Angie, how stressful! You are so brave (and so is little Colton), and I'm sure the end (and the answer) is near! I'm glad you are investigating it to be safe--breathing is so important.

Side note: He totally seems more mobile to me than when I saw him in October, so I promise he is making progress! He's wonderful!

I'm so sorry!! Ang that is so scary. I'm glad that your doctor decided to follow up on it rather than say something lame like "Oh, thats nothing to worry about." But having your baby have a scope into his breathing airways, i would be a big puddle of nerves and tears. Good luck with everything, you and colton will be in our prayers!!

I'm so glad you can have a procedure to check things out. I know he's in good hands, and all will be well.

He is absolutely beautiful and darling....and seems happy and comfortable despite the little glitch. Kids. Nobody prepares you for how much of your heart and psyche they'll occupy! He has no idea he's causing you any stress.

so scary!! I will keep your little one in my prayers, that the doctors will give you a correct and swift diagnosis and that it is not anything serious!

Angela--What a good mom you are to have tuned into that slightly abnormal breathing pattern and brought it to the pediatrician's attention. She probably would not have noticed it on a routine exam without you telling her about it. Way to go. I am so glad that there is a way for Colton to be checked out. Be thankful we live in a time and place that it is possible to find out what is going on. Every mom understands the stress of worrying about your children--and daddies worry too. Be at peace. We will all be praying for you here. Love you!

P.S. The "double dunk" was awesome! Colton is the cutest!

I agree with all the comments: he is so adorable, the double dunk is impressive, and the breathing is stressful. You must just listen to him breathe now all the time, analyzing it. Hannah's right: the answers are coming soon. I also agree with Hannah that he looks so much more mobile than when I last saw him! He has made such progress. You are doing all the right things. We'll pray for you, Mike, and Colton.

I noticed his breathing seemed a bit labored when we tended him the other night. I just thought he must be a little congested. The good thing is he doesn't seem to be uncomfortable at all; still a happy little guy. I'm glad your pediatrician was on top of getting it checked out so you can figure out what's going on. Just the wondering and not knowing is stressful. I hope all goes well at his appointment.

Yeah I can totally hear it - it's like he's holding his breath or something. Hmmm I'm sure that worries you to no end. Hopefully it turns out to be nothing but it's good of you to check it out - you can never be too careful with your little guy. And he does not look homeless :) haha - just totally adorable!!
